The Latvian soccer club Dinaburg was disqualified from the Baltic Soccer Club Tournament on March 16 for match fixing. The Daugavpils team had lost to Estonian team Trans in that country on March 14, with a scored of 0 's 2. Both goals were score at the very end of the game. After the game, information began to circulate in the Estonian press about allegations that the the game had been 'fixed.' Tournament organizers said that after an analysis of the video of the match, they concluded that Dinaburg had not been playing fair. All materials in the case will now be forwarded to the police for investigation and the incident will be reported to UEFA and FIFA, the tournament organizers said.
Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal came out on top in the race for the men's World Cup crown after winning the season's final giant slalom in Switzerland on March 17. The victory handed the 24-year-old the giant slalom World Cup crown, adding to the World Championships gold he earned last month. Svindal clocked two minutes and 7.82 seconds in Lenzerheide to beat Italy's Massimiliano Blardone and American Bode Miller.
The Los Angeles Kings have signed Latvian forward Raitis Ivanans to a one-year contract extension, Kings President and General Manager Dean Lombardi announced on March 18.
Ivanans, 28, has played in 56 games for the Kings this season, his first with the club, and has eight points and a team-high 117 penalty minutes. Ivanans signed with the Kings as a free agent on July 13, 2006.
